Wow, talk about an epic post! Thanks so much for your support an enthusiasm. It's players like you who we're building this stuff for, so it's very energizing to see such passion.

FYI, we wanted to get something out there for Android folks as quickly as possible, but I'm very aware that the current mobile web version is missing some important features -- like creating spots and swapping items. Fixing those two things is on the top of our (very long) list. :-) I personally want to see the mobile web version be every bit as slick and polished as the native-iPhone version.

Very interesting post! I hope you get to use the full capabilities of the game soon. I have been with Gowalla for a number of months, arriving from the enviable bliss of being totally unaware of Four Square. I have played Alamo Fire's FB game, PackRat for over a year and was totally excited when Gowalla was announced.

I do not think Gowalla-ing needs to be an either/or mode of play. My personal interests are three: 1)collecting and vaulting one of each item, 2)creating and visiting interesting spots around the globe, and 3)(since I am an early adopter) I have entered a fun-loving quest to check into as many spots as possible. (A practice lovingly referred to as 'faux'walla-ing). This flexibility in usage allows for individual goals (number and variety of items vaulted; number of check ins) and group projects, such as meet-ups with other players to take trips or collect featured stamps.

Have a great time!

My boyfriend made an impromptu trip out here to Vegas en route back to San Francisco, so he let me play Gowalla on his phone tonight (: But even though I talked his ear off all day about Gowalla and how it's frustrating to see nondescript locations like Subway and Marie Callendar (and Petsmart... I really am embarrassed about that) filling up the map out here, in what he thought was a kind gesture, he created a spot where we were having dinner with some friends tonight and checked me in.

Don't get me wrong-- the restaurant isn't a chain and it turned out to be surprisingly good food (and service), but I honestly don't feel like it's something that contributes to Vegas' identity. Put another way, if I were visiting from out of town and I saw this place on Gowalla and made the effort to visit it-- I'd leave with a happy stomach but an uncertainty as to why someone thought it was unique. So I need to ask a Gowalla rep if that spot can be deleted.

After, though, we went to two locations I definitely think make Vegas pretty cool-- a Zagat Top 10 in America pizzeria and the famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign! Super proud that I got to create and be a founder of these spots. I'll try to create a few more worthwhile spots around town tomorrow, as he leaves Wednesday...

I see why you really wanted me to come to Vegas ( :

ps. my bad on creating the lemongrass spot

At the risk of sounding overly sensitive, I have to say I would not create an Old Navy as a spot, but I *was* checking in at one. I noticed something I thought needed further clarification. I was not out tagging every shop on my path, but saw it as something that could come up for a place I, or someone else, might create.

I joined in May and since I have run around my city to create spots at many of our historic landmarks and local attractions, as well as places I frequent that I enjoy. I love my city and think that most passers-by take for granted the history and beautiful sights. I always add as much historical info and interesting bits as possible and hope that they will take the time to read and appreciate my spots.

On the flip side, like Beth, I also check in at as many places as possible that other people have made, whether it be a chain or a shop, as you do earn pins for the number of unique places you check into. It also allows you more chances to look for any missing items, which I am actively collecting.

I try to, for the most part, create spots that are worth going out of your way to see, (or eat at or shop etc) and take some pride in being the first one to get there to create and found them. As I see it, if someone else wants to make the Old Navy (or a McDonalds, their mailbox, etc) a spot... well, I can't stop them, I wouldn't do it myself (and maybe I shouldn't encourage them) but I will be happy to go check in and hope they left something good behind for me to find!

Happy Gowalla-ing! :)

Noah: It's cool, I deleted it last night before I fell asleep.

Hey hey - loved hearing your thoughts on foursquare vs. Gowalla.

One of the things we're hustling with most with foursquare is keeping up with how quickly our user base and community is growing. True, we do have some problems with noise (you call them "spots that are created for the sake of creation" which I love), but I'm not convinced this is a "foursquare vs Gowalla thing" - it seems like it's tied more to the speed at which we're growing. More users in denser areas = more noise. We get the fun task of dealing with this problem first (and I'm sure Gowalla will have to deal with it someday). I think we're both finding that using game mechanics to reward usage can be a tricky thing when once people start getting attached to the numbers... whether it's points or pins.

I also think your thoughts on "utility vs. game" are spot on. While it seems like we're both really exited about "making the world more discoverable", it'll be interesting to see how each of our "utility vs. game" biases change each product over time. We definitely see ourselves (foursquare) as "utility first, game second" and I think as we finally start launching some new features (almost. done. with. code. re-write!), both products will start looking less similar.

Anyway thanks for sharing and appreciate all your insight. Tell Noah we said hi... and don't worry... we'll suck you back into foursquare soon enough :)

Dennis! Two things:

1) I added an edit re: Foursquare; I found the "Edit" ability for locations I create via my phone, as well as the page where I can add new venues on the website. Awesome sauce and sorry I overlooked it before.

2) Noah created a Facebook account for me back in 2006. I played with it for a day or two, saw no value in it for me, never used it... until two years later. I'm not a power-user by any means now, but it's certainly a regular part of my life now. So just because I don't use Foursquare right now doesn't mean that'll always be the case. (:

Noah and I checked out the NYU ITP floor after that lunch, by the way... thanks for the recommendation! Really awesome projects. PacManhattan is still my favorite, though.

Also, Megan: your comment didn't come across as sensitive in the least-- I sincerely hope you didn't feel attacked by the attribution, as that wasn't my intention.

I'm actually going through the very-common problem of running out of Items. I know the easiest way to get Items is by checking in as much as possible, but here in Vegas, a good majority of our locations are chains, especially in the suburbs away from the Strip.

On the one hand, I want to stick to my guns. I don't want to check in at Pick Up Stix and Subway and the like because I don't want to encourage those sorts of spots.

On the other hand, I need more Items. It's a dilemma.

Flying up to SF in the morning, though, so there's a lot of opportunity for quality stamps for the rest of the week! Hopefully I'll be able to pick up some bonus Items and maybe even complete a Trip or two. (:

Re: http://twitter.com/meg_alomaniac/status/5579259860 -- no, nothing "wrong". Gowalla doesn't have rules, and checking in is clearly an essential part of Gowalla-ing (and obviously Gowalla wants their users to check in as much as possible-- otherwise, it wouldn't be awarded with pins!)... but different people want different things out of the game.

"I love my city and think that most passers-by take for granted the history and beautiful sights. I always add as much historical info and interesting bits as possible and hope that they will take the time to read and appreciate my spots."

I feel this way about my home, too-- and the part of me that likes the idea of people using Gowalla to find all the unique little areas that give a city its flavor (be it as a local or a visitor) wants it to be as easy as possible for other Gowalla-ers to load the map and see these places instantly. It's frustrating to have to zoom in to a four-block level in order to distinguish where these spots are amongst all the chains and bus stops.
